French National Institute for Research on Sustainable Development (IRD)
The Institut de Recherche pour le Développement is a French public scientific and technological institution (EPST) that has been working for more than 70 years in Southern countries. It is placed under the dual supervision of the Ministries of Research and Foreign Affairs.
Its research, expertise, development and training activities aim to contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of the countries of the South. Nearly 40% of the Institute’s staff are posted abroad and in overseas France.
Hosting structure : UMR 196 Ceped
The Ceped is a multidisciplinary joint research unit in social sciences associating the University Paris Descartes and the IRD with about a hundred members. It works mainly in the South with partners from research workcamps and university and research partners from the North (France and other European countries).
The UMR’s research focuses on the relations between population and development in the countries of the South (Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world), through three thematic areas: “Health, vulnerability and gender relations in the South”; “Migration, Power and Development”; “Education and Knowledge in the South”.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Mission
The “Climate Change, Migration and Health Systems Resilience” (ClimHB) project (2019-2023) is funded by the Investissements d’Avenir of the French National Research Agency (ANR) as part of the presidential program “Make Our Planet Great Again”. ClimHB aims to study the resilience of health systems and access to care in the context of climate change and migration in Haiti and Bangladesh: www.climhb.org
Data collection is being conducted in three phases in two sites in Haiti and Bangladesh: a qualitative exploratory phase, a quantitative phase, and a phase to explore quantitative results.
The collection of quantitative data will be organised in two parts:
- a population-based survey of the healthcare access capacities of households in a situation of mobility (or immobility);
- a survey of health care facilities to determine their accessibility and level of resilience.
Duties
- Planning, coordination, and support for data collection (monitoring of the quantitative component) in the research fields (Haiti, Bangladesh)
- Follow-up and facilitation of scientific dialogue on operationalizing the resilience of health systems
- Analysis of scientific literature
- Quantitative analyses from the population survey and the resilience survey
- Coordination of the writing and publication of scientific articles
- Contribution to knowledge transfer (visual and graphic representations, policy briefs)
Skills
Quantitative research; public health; demography; epidemiology; statistical analyses; organisation of research in countries at risk of safety and health hazards.
PROFILE
Education
PhD in public health (specialization in environmental health desired), PhD in epidemiology or quantitative demography, PhD in statistics.
Capacities
Experienced level of quantitative analysis; knowledge of mixed methods, academic level of English; quality of synthesis and scientific writing; coordination; intercultural fluency; rigor and caution during field missions, knowledge of low-income country contexts and experience of field surveys with primary data collection.
